The annual winter migration of die-hard Penn Theta college hoops fans occurred again in early March 2024. Alumni in the hundreds (OK…ten!) descended upon Philadelphia to see the mighty Quakers (2-10 Ivy) take on Columbia (4-7 Ivy) at the Cathedral of College Basketball, the Palestra.
Upon stopping by to confirm that the Chapter House was still standing, Jeff Karp `88 discovered that Spring Break began at the end of classes on Friday, so SAE was locked up tight and there were no undergrads to be found.
Festivities commenced at 10am Saturday morning at Cavanaugh’s Headhouse watching Liverpool beat Nottingham Forest 1-0 while drinking coffee and Tullamore D.E.W.
The celebration then moved to Misconduct Tavern near 15th & Locust where more brethren gathered.
After a rousing chorus of “Hoddy Totty,” the throng headed for the basement of New Deck Tavern where pre-game cheesesteaks (and more adult beverages) were consumed.
Finally, the troop paraded to the Palestra where Penn beat Columbia 84-72 to improve to 3-10 in the Ivy League! Brother Harry Fisher `89 caught a towel. Special shout-out to senior guard Clark Slajchert who scored his 1,000th point during the game.
